With reference to Your Lordship's
Confidential Despatch of the 25th. of last February, I have
the honour to forward herewith two interesting reports by
the District Officer at Taipo, dated the 29th. and 31st.

Your Lordship will observe that,
in spite of prolonged interrogation by the Magistrate,
Liang Tou refused to admit that he took part in killing the
Indian Police on Pat Heung Gap: and that, therefore, as
under Chinese Law a man cannot be convicted until he makes
confession, the Chinese Magistrate has remanded the case
with a view to torturing the prisoner and thereby extract-
-ing from him the necessary confession.
